Forestry England, public land and lead free ammunition policy

The legal deadline for lead bullets is 1 April 2029. For a good number of stalkers, though, the practical deadline arrived years earlier — because the organisation whose land they stalk on had already made the switch.

Policy moves ahead of legislation

Public land managers, conservation bodies and some large private estates have adopted lead free requirements for deer management on their ground independently of the statutory timetable. The reasoning tends to be a mixture of the environmental case, the venison supply chain, and a preference not to be caught out by a deadline.

Fox Bullets have been used by Forestry England as their preferred lead free bullet. For a stalker holding permission on public forestry, that sort of policy is not advisory — it is a condition of being there.

Who is likely to require lead free already

• Public forestry bodies and their contractors.
• Conservation organisations and wildlife trusts managing deer on their reserves.
• Estates supplying venison into chains that specify non-lead — see game dealers and venison buyers.
• Any ground where a management agreement predates and anticipates the restriction.

What it means in practice

If you stalk across several permissions, the strict answer is that you need a lead free load working now, not in 2029 — because the moment one of your permissions requires it, carrying two loads and two zeroes for the same rifle is a poor idea. It is far simpler to move the rifle over once and be done.

Switching to lead free before 2029 sets out a workable plan for doing that without rushing it.
