Lead free bullets for the .270 WSM

Fox Classic Hunter in the .270 Winchester Short Magnum, and the seating depth question that comes with a short, fat case.

Last updated 28 July 2026

The .270 WSM delivers .270 Winchester performance and more from a shorter, wider case in a short action. It fires the same .277 inch bullet, so both Fox Classic Hunter weights apply.

Which weight

The 145 grain makes particular sense here. The WSM's extra velocity suits a heavier, higher-BC bullet, and the combination gives you flat trajectory and deep penetration together — a good pairing for red and sika. The 130 grain is the faster, flatter option.

The short magnum problem

Seating depth needs more attention here
A short, fat case in a short action gives you less room to seat a long bullet out. A 35.7mm monolithic will intrude further into the powder space, and magazine length constrains how far you can push it back out.

In practice this means: establish your distance to the lands, check magazine fit before deciding on an overall length, and expect to give up a little case capacity. It is entirely workable, it just needs more care than the long-action .270 Winchester does.

Twist rate

.270 WSM rifles are commonly 1:10, which handles both Fox weights.

We do not publish load data
Velocities here are approximate and for orientation only. Always work from current published data for your cartridge, bullet weight and powder, and work up from the starting charge. See reloading Fox Classic Hunter.
Do .270 Winchester and .270 WSM use the same bullets?

Yes, both fire .277 inch bullets, so the same Fox Classic Hunter weights load into either. The cases and load data differ.

Is seating depth a problem in a .270 WSM with monolithic bullets?

It needs more attention than in the standard .270. The short, wide case in a short action leaves less room to seat a long bullet out, so check magazine fit and expect some loss of powder space.
